It's a waste of time, and annoys the pig.

Um, are you sure about that, several scientific studies show that pigs (and a lot of other domesticated animals) are happier when there is music in their homes. A lot of animal research stations are always playing music for their mice and rats, making them _much_ friendlier to work with. Although music with a lot of beats in it does tend scare them. -- PS

I never said that pigs don't like music. Heck, my mother-in-law likes music, and she can't sing to save her life. Anyway, it was meant metaphorically. I added it to the Wiki to remind me that there are some arguments one simply shouldn't get involved in. -- WHD

Ah, like the recent copyright and control rage -- AK

Um, yes, mothers-in-law singing... Now you've presented me with a truly scary picture. And some even dare to put their stuff on CDs and sell it. <shudder> -- PS

I prefer: Never wrestle with a pig, you both get dirty and the pig likes it!

That's the problem: there's the a pig who can't learn to sing and is expressing honest annoyance about your attempts and then there's the pig who could learn to sing but who simply enjoys being, well, a pig. On the 'net, it's often difficult to tell which kind you're dealing with.

That is to say, "Never wrestle with a troll, you both get dirty and the troll likes it." -- WHD

Ah, now we come closer to the real sense of life. -- [HRB]

Fabricio Rocha - Any attempt may get you into serious problems, and here's the proof for the tech-oriented ones:
% proc pig { note } { return [::msgcat::mc "oinc"] }

% set oooh [::msgcat::mc "oinc"]; set voice $oooh; while { $voice eq $oooh } {foreach note {C D E F G A B} {set voice [pig $note]}; puts $voice}

+++++ The Lion and the Skunk +++++

The skunk went around the forest telling everyone he was king of the forest.

At first the animals would reply: "But skunk, everyone knows that the lion is king of the forest."

So, the skunk said: "I'll prove that I am king of the forest by defeating the lion in a wrestling match."

So, the skunk went about posting notices on the trees in the forest...
  ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
  ++ I, the skunk, do hearby challenge the lion ++
  ++ to a wrestling match on Saturday at the ++
  ++ old tree stump. The winner of the match ++
  ++ shall be proclaimed the king of the forest. ++
  ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Saturday came, and all the animals were there, but the lion was missing. The skunk climbed upon the old tree stump and proclaimed himself king of the forest because the lion was afraid to even wrestle with him.

The lion strolled up to the edge of the gathering and looked at the skunk and smiled.

The fox said to the lion: "But why are you not wrestling with the skunk? Is it true that you are afraid of the skunk, and that the skunk can defeat you?"

The lion replied: "If I should wrestle with the skunk, I will defeat him because I am king of the forest, and he will gain honor and glory from having wrestled with the king of the forest. But for me, everywhere I go, for quite some time to come, everyone will know that I have kept close company with a skunk.

Never challenge a pig to mud-wrestling... you'll only get dirty and the pig will enjoy it.

My grandpa used to recite this little ditty; Google[1] turns up many variants, but I remember it like this:
One day in late October, when I was partly sober,
I was carting home a load with manly pride,
When my feet began to stutter and I fell into the gutter,
And a pig came up and lay down by my side.

We sang "It's All Fair Weather" and "Good Friends Get Together"
when a lady passing by was heard to say:
"You can tell a man who boozes by the company he chooses"...
And the pig got up and slowly walked away.
